At one time considered the breadbasket of Central America, Nicaragua is now the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Coupled with natural disasters, civil war, and failed leadership in the 1980’s and 1990’s, 60% of Nicaraguans live on less than $2 per day. Only 4 hours by plane from Atlanta, God has burdened us with compassion to serve the people of Nicaragua, Specifically, the people of Jinotega and Matagalpa in the mountainous region of the north central part of the country.
Partnering with the local church through Highlands Mission Cooperative, we are endeavoring to make a difference in the lives of families by providing basic needs such as sanitation, clean water, medical and dental services, children’s ministries and education.
About Highlands Mission Cooperative:
Guided by our mission statement and in concert with local leadership, we search out the most urgent needs of a community. With the help and support of the local leaders, we work to develop a strategy that will help them overcome their physical and social challenges to improve the health and welfare of their communities. All through these processes we are seeking to support or develop a local faith community. Where an existing church is present, we seek to support the pastor in developing a working relationship with the local community leaders. Often these relationships are already in place. Where there is not an active faith community, we seek to develop leadership that will be come the nucleus of a new body of believers. We are currently working with some local pastors who already have the beginnings of a strategic plan to plant churches in the larger villages throughout the regions of Matagalpa and Jinotega. Through these efforts and others that God lays before us, our hope and prayer is that together we might expand the reach of the gospel of Christ into the central highlands of Nicaragua.
Pray with us as we seek the Lord in our desire to serve the people of Nicaragua.
